Advances in enhanced oil recovery technology are to be showcased in a talk in Aberdeen tomorrow.
According to the Society of Petroleum of Engineers, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) accounts for just a fraction of world oil production despite being in existence for over 30 years.
However, high oil prices and global energy demand are seeing increased use of EOR.
The first use of polymer flood EOR in deepwater, offshore Angola, will be outlined during the society’s Aberdeen section talk at the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa.
EOR expert Danielle Morel from oil giant Total will talk about the lessons learned from the project and how it has opened the door for further offshore work using the technology.
She said: “In the field of chemical EOR, we are seeing an increasing number of pilots across the globe, as well as projects beginning to come to fruition.
“In China, for example, more than 200,000 barrels of polymer EOR oil are being produced per day.
“The application of EOR is still very limited deep offshore, however, with the first application only starting in Angola in 2008.”
