A not-for-profit organisation with a mission to find, fuel and spark the next generation of business leaders in Scotland, is establishing itself in the north-east.
The Saltire Foundation develops young people to unlock the potential of Scotland’s renowned technological and research abilities and release them on a global market.
Chris Gordon, 25, who has just completed a Wood Group graduate scheme in Aberdeen, might not have got into the oil and gas world but for the Saltire Foundation.
“I was selected to undertake the foundation’s undergraduate scholarship programme in 2008 while studying management with business law at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh.
“I was placed with Wood Group in Houston, Texas, where I undertook a rotational programme across different business elements of the oil and gas industry.
“These experiences ultimately sealed the decision for me to commence my graduate career in the industry.”
“The Saltire Foundation experience has certainly enabled me to have a more strategic vision in terms of the role I want to have,” he said.
The foundation’s Aberdeen group held its first major event late last year, with more than 100 Aberdeen business leaders attending a dinner to learn more about the Saltire Foundation and the impact it can have on individuals.
Chris added: “Whether you are a prospective candidate or a potential host company, my advice would be to certainly engage with the Saltire Foundation where you can play your part in Scotland’s future on an international business platform.”
The Saltire Foundation offers three programmes that fast track the development of potential business leaders:
o Saltire Scholars are outstanding undergraduates from Scottish universities who gain experience and confidence from placements with leading companies all over the world.
o Saltire Fellows already have the business experience, the passion and the potential that makes them exceptional leaders. The intensive Fellowship programme, which starts at Babson College in the US, accelerates their development.
o Saltire Alumni provides a platform for past scholars and fellows to flourish through regular masterclasses, networking and job opportunities.
