An offshore wind company has come up with a solution to local unemployment – by helping the jobless kick-start their careers in the energy industry.
A newly developed qualification by Maersk Training has already helped secure offshore windfarm technician jobs to the participants of its pilot programme, Boston Energy.
The Level 2 Diploma in Staying safe in the wind turbine environment (onshore and offshore), lasting approximately ten weeks and scheduled to run every two to three months, is aimed at English residents who are unemployed and in receipt of benefits, aged 19 or over on August 31 this year.
“Tough economic times mean unemployment rates are high in our region,” said Stuart Cameron, managing director at Maersk Training.
“Encouragingly, the offshore wind energy sector is expanding at a very fast pace and there are numerous opportunities for people seeking employment and looking to get into a fast-growing industry, however learning these safety skills is a vital prerequisite.”
