Aberdeen energy service firm Hydro Group has invested £300,000 in a fancy new piece of kit to help it make tougher underwater cables for the oil and gas industry.
The company said yesterday it had installed and commissioned an advanced armouring line at its Bridge of Don facility, becoming one of only a few UK businesses to have the technology.
Hydro Group, which designs and manufactures cables and connectors for subsea and onshore use, said its custom-designed single and multi-layered steel armoured cables were able to withstand higher stresses in subsea and defence operations.
Managing director Doug Whyte added: “The new machinery is a significant addition to our current capabilities, as well as enhancing the quality of work we produce.
“The installation is the first of two armouring lines, with the second, which will have greater capacity in size and overall lengths, being installed after completion of our facility extension later in the year.
“Expanding our technologies is something we pride ourselves on at Hydro Group, and with our two new armouring systems we will have the capability to enhance our clients operations.”
Hydro Group, comprising Hydro Bond Engineering and Hydro Cable Systems, employs about 100 people.
It was founded as Hydro Bond Engineering by Mr Whyte in 1982.
More than 30 years on, the group now serves the energy and defence industries, with projects including work on submarine platforms and acoustic ranges for navies around the world.
Its oil and gas customers include blue chip and major operators and contractors in domestic and international subsea markets.
Last year, the group said it was on track for annual turnover of £8.5million – up from £7.1million in 2013 – after an increase in work from the subsea sector.
