A video has been shared online of an innovative mechanism for rapidly getting workers to the top of wind turbines.
It shows a worker entering a tower and clipping into a winch attached to a ladder, thought to be a 3S Lift Climb Auto System, which swiftly and smoothly ascends the huge structure.
They then unhook inside the body of the turbine nacelle, before climbing a ladder out into the open.
The recording has been shared on a range of social media accounts by wind industry group TCGM, short for Tower Climbing Grease Monkeys.
Set up by US engineer Neal Gyngard, the group is a “place where wind turbine techs from all over the world” can share their knowledge and experiences.
It is believed that the onshore turbine in the video is Chinese made, and other models have different mechanisms for getting workers to the top.
Technicians often need to gain access to the inner working of wind units to carry out operations and maintenance.
As the onshore and offshore green energy industry grows, new technologies are being developed to increase safety and improve efficiency.
