This year marked a milestone for the original North Sea find - the Forties field.
North Sea Forties crude oil will load at a rate of 455,171 barrels a day in February, down from January's revised rate of 523,000bpd, according to reports.
Many working in the North Sea have still to recognise the full impact of $50 oil and the crisis affecting the sector, according to one senior industry figure.
The development of the Forties field in the North Sea was somewhat similar to “putting a man on the moon” according to Apache’s former UK managing director Jim House.
We pick up the story on March 24, 2001, at a UK Offshore Operators Association breakfast in Aberdeen when BP’s then North Sea chief said he saw a good future for the company’s mature assets.
The Scottish Government said new discoveries made by Apache in the UKCS could bring more investment, jobs and supply chain opportunities for the North Sea oil and gas industry. Last month the US explorer said it had made significant discoveries in the North Sea in both the Beryl and Forties field which could hold up to 70million barrels of oil equivalent. Apache also said two discoveries were made on two exploration wells in the Beryl area as well as further discovery 50 miles south of the company’s Forties field.
When young petroleum engineer Frank Musgrave stepped on board BP's brand new Forties Alpha platform in the late summer of 1975, he was entirely focused on his role in getting the oil flowing, not on playing a part in a key period of British history.
The Buzzard oilfield in the North Sea has begun ramping up production once again after a four-day outage. The operator Nexen said the field, which is the largest contributor to the Forties crude oil stream, was coming back online after it was shut down last week. Buzzard produces about 186,000 barrels per day (bpd).
A planned shutdown of the Buzzard oilfield in the North Sea is likely to be rescheduled for November. The move would boost next month's supply of crude which helps underpin the Brent benchmark. The shutdown had originally been planned for next month instead.
Paradigm Flow Services has completed a deluge remediation and replacement project in the Forties field for Apache North Sea. The company finished the work as part of its service on four of the Forties assets. The team has been undertaking a variety of work to ensure the lifetime of the system including valve replacement work, cleaning drains and parts and then testing the system with air and water. Paradigm also completed hydraulic modelling to verify that all changes were accurately captured.
Amec Foster Wheeler has been awarded a contract from BP worth more than $73million to provide maintenance and project support for the Forties pipeline system in the North Sea. The deal includes work on the Unity offshore platform and onshore pumping stations in Aberdeenshire and Perthshire, as well as the Central Area Transmission (CATS) terminal in north-east England. It will run until January 2020 and will be managed from Amec Foster Wheeler's Aberdeen offices.
