Nigg best placed to create offshore wind jobs

Nigg Energy Park has been identified as the best prepared of Scotland's east coast ports to create jobs from offshore wind contracts in a new industry report. The Cromarty Firth facility's potential was highlighted in the findings of a strategic review, which also examined the capabilities of Invergordon, Aberdeen, Dundee, Montrose, Methil and Rosyth as well as ports on England's east coast. Conducted by the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC), the study focused on the capability of ports to carry out "staging" work, storing and loading offshore wind farm components and carrying out pre-construction activities. It also assessed their ability to manufacture large components in or near their sites.

Developer confident of wind farm go-ahead despite subsidy setback

The backers of a £2billion wind farm planned for the outer Forth Estuary have not been scared off by moves to scrap a subsidy agreement, the project’s developer said yesterday. The Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC), which manages for the contracts for difference (CfDs) for the UK Government, said in late March it would terminate the state subsidy for the Neart na Gaoithe (NNG) wind farm. But developer Mainstream Renewable Power said it was not taking the setback lying down and insisted funding was still in place for NNG, which was expected to result in £1.1billion of spending in Scotland and create 600 jobs.

Planned £230m wind farm off Aberdeen edges closer to construction stage

Offshore survey group Fugro has started assessing the seabed in Aberdeen bay ahead of the construction stage of a £230million wind farm project. Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm Limited (AOWFL), the joint venture company behind the project, said the information gathered would help it design the foundations for the 11-turbine scheme. While an investment decision on the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC) has yet to be taken, building work is slated to start in late 2017 ahead of first power in 2018, according to AOWFL.

£2bn windfarm project nears construction as backers found

A consortium has pledged £500million worth of backing for a £2billion wind farm planned for the outer Forth Estuary, bringing the construction phase a step closer, the company behind the project said yesterday. Mainstream Renewable Power is now in a stronger position to meet the March 26 deadline for achieving financial close, though a judicial review continues to cast doubt on the scheme. The Neart na Gaoithe (NNG) wind farm would bring huge economic gains to Scotland. More than £540million will be spent in Scotland during the construction phase, with 500 jobs created.
