Energy treaties with Norway seem to happen with puzzling regularity these days. Last October, the then UK energy secretary, Chris Huhne, and his Oslo counterpart signed "an historic energy agreement" - according to a DECC (Department of Energy & Climate Change) press release - to "co-operate further on renewables, oil and gas and the use of technology such as carbon capture and storage".
Less than a year after Iran discovered a huge gasfield in its territorial waters in the Caspian Sea, National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) has reported a huge oilfield discovery in the same area.
Oil giant Royal Dutch Shell has sent letters to Greenpeace offices around the world warning the campaign group not to interrupt its exploration in the Arctic.
TECHNOLOGY and operational challenges posed by the Arctic are not as complex and demanding as previously believed, the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority has claimed.
