Robert Gordon University (RGU) has joined forces with Perth-based well engineering firm Merlin ERD to offer an intensive oil and gas drilling course.
The three day programme aims to help oil and gas workers get to grips with extended reach drilling, a technique which increases hydrocarbon production and makes marginal fields more economic.
Those who sign up will benefit from a combination of classroom exercises and training on RGU’s drilling simulation suite, known as DART.
The DrillSIM-6000 simulator has a control cabin offering users a realistic drilling experience.
It uses computer software, projectors and 3D graphics to mimic the drilling equipment currently used in the industry.
Maersk recently used the simulator to prepare for its drilling campaign on the Culzean field in the North Sea.
Peter Howell, drilling and wells excellence manager at RGU’s Oil and Gas Institute, said: “Course delegates have the opportunity to apply newly-learned techniques and methods within the safe environment of DART.
“This practical hands-on approach ensures the effective planning of complex extended reach wells when executing challenging drilling programmes.”
Merlin managing director Iain Hutchinson said: “Participation in the course develops individual skills and can build teams’ capabilities.
“The combination of theory, practical and non-technical skills training allows each delegate to develop their own competence in this specialist area.”
