Pupils at Aberdeen’s Kincorth Academy were given crash course in engineering yesterday.
AFBE-UK Scotland, a chapter of its larger UK social enterprise, brought its Next Gen programme into the school to show fourth year pupils the everyday applications of the sector.
Looking to inspire young engineers of the future, AFBE-UK Scotland undertook a series of games and challenges designed to put the Kincorth pupil’s problem solving, teamwork and communication skills to the test.
Students were also treated to an animated video which highlighted the applications that engineering has in everyday life, before taking part in a group helicopter landing pad design challenge.
Mr Ollie Folayan, chair of AFBE-UK Scotland, said: “We are delighted to be working together with schools across Aberdeen to promote engineering as a career choice.
“We hope to highlight that engineering is about being creative, bringing projects to life and doing something that can have a real impact on day-to-day life. We’re looking forward to engaging with secondary pupils for the first time.”
Despite having engaged over 600 primary-age pupils throughout Aberdeen through the NextGen programme, this event was the first time that not-for-profit organisation, AFBE-UK Scotland, had performed the programme within a secondary school.
Set up in 2011, the programme brings together industry professionals and young people to provide them with an authentic look into of the world of work while showcasing potential future career options.
