A consortium of business and public sector organisations in East Anglia has joined forces to bid for funding for energy industry firms to help take on and train new recruits.
The East of England Energy Group, the New Anglia Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Group and Marine East, supported by Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex county councils have made the bid to the UK in order to support, through the introduction of a financial package, the efforts of employers who take on an energy-related apprentice or a recent graduate.
The consortium says there are substantial opportunities for businesses along the east coast arising from developments in the energy industry, especially in offshore wind and nuclear.
“Growth in the energy sector will create increased demand for engineers and technicians, construction workers, and people with offshore and maritime experience,” said the group.
“There will also be more generic commercial skills needed including project management, finance, accountancy, sales and marketing.
“With a shortage of skilled staff already evident in the region we need to act now to ensure that we have the resources to exploit new business opportunities as they arise and maintain current activity.”
