Women’s ‘raw talent’ could be the answer to the skills shortage affecting the energy sector, believes an industry skills leader.
Larraine Boorman, managing director of OPITO, said while women have proved themselves valuable and skilful workers, the industry only attracts 3-4% of female workforce.
Speaking at the Aberdeen Global Energy Career Expo, Boorman claimed the problem starts in the British education system, which portrays industry-related subjects, such as engineering and maths, as male-oriented.
“Whilst they might not have taken the educational qualifications in the subjects that we deem required, when they do come in to the industry we do find that they perform very, very well,” Boorman told Energy Voice.
“So we know there’s that raw talent that could be nurtured and developed, very useful to the industry.
“If we’re struggling to find the numbers and there’s that talent there, it makes sense to try and attract it and use it in the industry,” she added.
