Pupils from Cults Academy have reached the finals of this year’s Petrochallenge after winning the heat in Aberdeen.
Over 180 students from 12 schools across the north-east participated in this year’s competition, organised annually by Opito.
The event is designed to engage young people with the industry from an early age through a set of tactical and team-work challenges.
Operating a virtual $200million budget, the pupils have to find and invest in a profitable oil and gas field – the team who gets the biggest return on their investment wins.
The team of Tom Cook, Natasha Pitman, Morag Christie and Amiriah Ahmed – or ‘Newts Incorporated’ – took top honours for the region, and now will go forward to the finals.
“Part of the Opito role is to enthuse and attract people into the oil and gas industry and part of that is engaging with school pupils through various initiatives and events – Petrochallenge is one of those,” said Diane Johnson, skills and learning development coordinator at Opito.
“We need to fill a huge skills gap in the industry, so if we can enthuse these people to join the industry when leaving school, further education or once they’ve done a degree, they can join the industry after that.”
