Pupils at schools in the north-east will be able to experience the energy industry first hand through a careers’ training programme being piloted this year in the region.
The two-year Careers Academy mentoring programme aims to give school-leavers a better insight into the energy sector.
Fifth-year pupils from The Gordon Schools Huntly, Portlethen, Peterhead, Kincorth and Oldmachar Academies will be mentored by employee volunteers from a number of companies including BP, Petrofac, Wood Group and Centrica.
The BP-backed programme, which will launch on October 1, will involve lectures, workshops and a five-week paid internship to help the students gain necessary skills to enter the industry.
“The response from all businesses in providing mentors and internships has been fantastic and, from research elsewhere in the UK, the benefits to businesses when they engage with young people in this way are remarkable – great impact on the students and great impact on the mentors within the businesses,” Alec Carstairs, chair of the local area board for Career Academies UK.
