Work experience, especially in an international setting, is the key focus of Robert Gordon University’s revised graduate employability scheme.
The Employability Plus survey, which the university hopes will strengthen its position as the leading UK university for graduate employment, indicated work placements, experience of foreign companies and cultures and student self-awareness are the main factors in securing post-study employment in the job market.
“When students get into employment after graduation they already have experience of the workplace, they know what it’s like, they know how they need to act and react in it, so that they can hit the ground running when they do get into employment – and employers like that,” RGU principal Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski told Energy Voice.
The university is now working closely with employers to open more work experience opportunities to the students.
“We have relationships with a number of employers, both big companies and SMEs,” said Prof. von Prondzynski.
“Some employers will take on this role of taking students on work experience because we persuade them that that’s a good thing. Some don’t realise that it could be, but actually for almost all employers that’s also a great advantage as well – it’s a way to try out a potential employee and see if that relationship might work.
“So we find that the employers we work with are very enthusiastic about the placements.”
