Seabox will lead a joint industry project (JIP) that will bring advanced subsea water treatment closer to full scale development.
Carried out with Az ACG, Suncor, SIPCO and the support of the Research Council of Norway, the JIP will see Seabox complete a design of a subsea SWIT (subsea water intake and treatment) and membranes plant capable of producing quality water from surrounding water on the seabed.
The firm will also identify technology components available on the market and suitable for use in the SWIT plant.
Seabox chief executive Helge Lunde said: “Costs of offshore field developments have soared significantly in recent years. This JIP is designed to develop a more cost effective alternative to today’s heavy and expensive topside water treatment plants.”
Seabox has spent the past 10 years developing its SWIT technology. The company recently completed a pilot seabed test of its SWIT system in combination with a membrane process plant for sulphate and salt removal, sponsored by the industry.
It is expected to finalise the JIP in the second half of 2015.
