An oil worker today spoke of the moment an exploding meteor light up his journey home from offshore.
Ross Stewart was making his way back onshore when the entire sky flared up.
He said: “I’ve just returned back from offshore and was on a helicopter back to Aberdeen at the time of the meteor tonight. I’m just off night shift, so was wide awake at the time. I noticed a few small clouds that seemed to be glowing slightly, then the whole sky above the chopper lit up followed by a series of flashes. I thought we were going to be hit by lightning.
“My partner was driving north to pick me up and was just outside Forfar when it happened.”
Her dashcam captured the brilliant moment. Watch the footage below.
The suspected meteor explosion lit up the north and north-east last night. The bright white flash darted across the sky at about 7pm. Astronomers said it was most likely a meteor burning up after entering the atmosphere.
The meteor shower triggered calls to police from people claiming their homes shook.
The spectacle on Monday evening was witnessed across Scotland, and prompted many to report the sight of a “fireball” in the sky and a violent bang.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said they began receiving calls at around 6.55pm on Monday evening.
She said: “One told us the sky had been lit up with an object like a fireball. Another caller said there was a very loud bang and others said the house shook.
“We know police in Inverness and in the south also received calls – it was seen by people across Scotland.
“We have checked and been told it was likely to be a meteor shower.”
