Dong Energy scored a victory for the “green revolution” yesterday after completing a £160million conversion of one of its power stations, which will now use wood pellets instead of coal.
Dong said the transformation of the Studstrup plant near Aarhus would cut CO2 emissions by 1 tonne per resident.
About 225,000 people live in Aarhus, Denmark’s second biggest city.
Aarhus has targeted becoming CO2-neutral city by 2030.
Thomas Dalsgaard, executive vice president of Dong Energy, said: “I’m delighted that we can now open the new, green Studstrup Power Station, which will be able to supply green district heating to Aarhus and green electricity to the Danish grid.
“That means a significant contribution to the green revolution, and we’re well on the way to establishing an energy system that is green, independent and economically sustainable.”
